Privacy Policy

This policy explains what personal information DateNight collects, why, who can see it, and the choices you have. It applies to members in Canada. If you live in Austria or elsewhere in the EU, read the Austria / EU privacy policy instead.

Last updated:

The short version. We collect what's needed to run a dating app: your profile, the dates you post and join, and your messages. Other members only see your profile, never your email or exact location. We don't sell your data, show ads, or share it with data brokers. You can delete your account, and everything in it, at any time.

Who we are

DateNight is operated by Robert Riopel, Toronto, Ontario, Canada (“DateNight”, “we”, “us”). Robert Riopel is responsible for DateNight's compliance with Canadian privacy law, including the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA), and is our privacy contact: rriopel.design@gmail.com.

What we collect

InformationDetails
AccountWhen you sign in with Google, we receive your email address, the name and profile picture on your Google account, and your Google account ID.
Profile (required)Your name, date of birth (members see your age, not the date), gender, who you're interested in, your city, three to six photos, and your height.
Profile (optional)Bio, education, ethnicity, religion, politics, drinking, smoking, drug use, whether you have or want kids, interests, prompts, and Instagram and LinkedIn handles.
Approximate locationThe city you choose, and coordinates rounded to about 1 km so we can show dates near you. If you tap “detect my location”, your device's location is used once to find your city and is then rounded the same way.
ActivityDates you post (title, description, time, venue and a photo of the venue), requests to join, approvals, chat messages, reports you file, your search filters and email settings, and whether you've added DateNight to your home screen.
Consent recordsWhen you confirmed you're 18 or older and accepted our Terms, and which version.
WaitlistIf you join the waitlist: your email, and optionally your name and location.
TechnicalYour sign-in session is kept in your browser's storage. Our hosting providers keep short-lived server logs (such as IP address, browser and time). We use cookieless, anonymous analytics; see the Cookie Policy.

Sensitive information

Some profile details are sensitive: who you're interested in, and, if you add them, your ethnicity, religion, politics and drug use. Everything except who you're interested in is optional. We only use these details to show your profile to other members and to apply the filters people choose. You can change or remove them in your profile at any time, or delete your account.

How we use it

  • To run DateNight: create your account, show your profile and dates to other members, match people whose interests fit both ways, show dates within your chosen distance, and let you request, approve and chat.
  • To email you about your dates: requests, approvals, new messages and reminders. You can turn these off in Settings or with the unsubscribe link in any email.
  • To keep people safe: review reports, remove content, and suspend or ban accounts that break our Terms.
  • To secure and improve the service: prevent abuse, fix problems, and understand overall usage through anonymous analytics.
  • To meet legal obligations.

We don't sell personal information, use it for advertising, or make decisions about you based solely on automated processing.

Who can see it

  • Other signed-in members can see the dates you post. Your profile (name, age, city, photos and the details you add) is shown only to members your upcoming dates are shown to (you're each looking for someone like the other, and the date is within 100 km of them) and to people you've shared a date with. When you join a date, its host and approved guests can see that you're attending, and chat participants see your messages.
  • Nobody else can see your email address, exact location, filters or email settings. Profiles aren't public and aren't indexed by search engines.
  • Service providers who run parts of DateNight for us, under contracts that limit their use of your information to providing their service:
    • Supabase (Supabase Pte. Ltd., Singapore): database, sign-in and photo storage. Your profile, messages and photos are stored in Canada (Montréal).
    • Vercel: website hosting and anonymous analytics (United States and global edge network).
    • Resend: sending our emails (United States).
    • Google: Sign in with Google, and Google Maps for city and venue search. When you search for a place or detect your location, the search (and your IP address) goes to Google.
  • Authorities, if the law requires it or to protect someone's safety.

Some providers process information outside Canada, including in the United States and Singapore, where it may be accessible to authorities under local law.

How long we keep it

  • Your account: for as long as you have one. When you delete your account, your profile, photos, the dates you host (with their requests and chats), your requests and your messages are deleted from our live systems straight away. Copies in backups are overwritten within 30 days.
  • Past dates: deleted 90 days after they take place, together with their requests and chat, unless they've been reported.
  • Reports: while the accounts involved exist, so we can act on repeated problems.
  • Waitlist: until we launch near you and let you know, or until you unsubscribe or ask us to remove you.
  • Server logs: kept by our hosting providers for a short period, typically 30 days or less.

Your choices and rights

  • See and change your profile at any time in the app.
  • Delete your account: Profile → Settings → Delete Account.
  • Stop emails: Profile → Settings → Notifications, or the unsubscribe link in any email.
  • Ask for a copy of your personal information, a correction, or anything else about your data: email rriopel.design@gmail.com. We'll reply within 30 days.
  • Withdraw consent to optional information by removing it from your profile. Some information is needed to run the service, so withdrawing that means closing your account.

If you're not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.

Security

Information is encrypted in transit. Dates are only available to signed-in members, profiles and photos only to the members described above, and private details (your email, exact location and settings) are only readable by you and our systems. No system is perfectly secure; if a breach creates a real risk of significant harm, we'll notify you and the Privacy Commissioner as the law requires.

Age

DateNight is for adults 18 and over. We don't knowingly collect information from anyone younger, and we delete it if we find out.

Changes

If we make a significant change to this policy, we'll tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect. The date at the top shows the latest version.
