Safety

Meeting someone new, safely

DateNight is built around meeting in person, so here's exactly what we do to keep that safer, what we don't do, and what we suggest you do too.

In danger right now? Call 911 in Canada or 112 (or police 133) in Austria.

What DateNight does

  • Adults only. You must be 18 or older. We check the birthday you enter, and the app won't accept or show anyone under 18.
  • Hosts choose who comes. Nobody can join a date without the host approving them first.
  • Short, purposeful chat. Chat only opens 24 hours before a date, only for the host and approved guests, and each person can send three messages. There's less room for pressure, love-bombing or scams.
  • Your private details stay private. Other members never see your email address or your exact location, only the city you chose. Your profile is only shown to members who could join one of your dates (you're each looking for someone like the other, and they're within 100 km) and to people you've shared a date with. It's never public or shown to search engines.
  • Public venues. Dates are posted at a named place (a café, bar, park or venue), not a home address.
  • Reporting. Any date can be reported, and so can anyone you've crossed paths with on a date. Reports go straight to our team.

What DateNight doesn't do (yet)

We'd rather tell you plainly than let you assume:

  • We don't verify identity documents or run background checks. Signing in with Google confirms an email address, not who someone is.
  • There's no block button yet. If someone makes you uncomfortable, report them and decline their requests.
  • We're a small team in beta. We read every report, but we can't monitor dates as they happen.

Before the date

  • Look at the profile and the plan. If something doesn't add up, trust that feeling. You never have to join or approve anyone.
  • Tell a friend where you're going, who you're meeting and when you expect to be done.
  • Keep it in the app at first. Hold off on sharing your phone number, home address, workplace or social accounts until you've met and want to.
  • Never send money or financial details to someone you met on DateNight, whatever the story.

On the date

  • Meet in the public place listed and stay in public for a first meeting.
  • Get yourself there and back. Keep your own way home, and your phone charged.
  • Watch your drink and know your limits.
  • Leave whenever you want. You don't owe anyone an explanation. Venue staff can help if you feel unsafe.

Reporting someone

Tap Report this date on any date page, choose a reason and add details. If you've crossed paths with someone (you asked to join their date, or they asked to join yours), you can also report them from the bottom of their profile. Each person can report something once.

Reports never remove anyone automatically: a person on our team reviews each one and can remove dates and ban accounts. The person you report isn't told who reported them.

If something happened that a report doesn't cover, email rriopel.design@gmail.com. If a crime was committed, please also contact the police.
